Scientists find three years left of remaining carbon budget for 1.5°C
19 June 2025, Bonn – The central estimate of the remaining carbon budget for 1.5°C is 130 billion tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) (from the beginning of 2025). This would be exhausted in a little more than three years at current levels of CO2 emissions, according to the latest Indicators of Global Climate Change study published today in the journal Earth System Science Data, and the budget for 1.6°C or 1.7°C could be exceeded within nine years.

Led by France and Norway, Twelve European Countries Launch World’s First Intergovernmental Organization for Digital Ocean Systems at UN Ocean Conference
Twelve European countries, led by France and Norway, have signed an international convention at the UN Ocean Conference (UNOC3) in Nice to establish the Mercator International Centre for the Ocean, the world's first intergovernmental organization for digital ocean systems. This initiative will deliver cutting-edge ocean intelligence, including the European Digital Twin of the Ocean, to support climate resilience, marine safety, environmental protection, and a sustainable blue economy, with an operational launch planned for 2027.

Nice, France – 8 June 2025 - The Starfish Barometer, first annual, science-based bulletin on global ocean health, is published today in the journal State of The Planet and unveiled at the 3rd UN Ocean Conference (UNOC3) in Nice. Developed by a multidisciplinary team of leading experts and overseen by the international scientific committee of the One Ocean Science Congress, the Starfish Barometer delivers - for the first time - a comprehensive, peer-reviewed overview of global ocean health, human pressures, and societal impacts.

Europe Showcases AI-Powered Digital Twin of the Ocean as Major Outcome of the European Ocean Pact at UNOC3
At the UN Ocean Conference (UNOC3), on June 9, Mercator Ocean International will unveil the next-generation European Digital Twin of the Ocean (DTO), an advanced AI-powered platform designed to simulate and explore "what-if" scenarios that reveal the potential impacts of our decisionon the ocean. As a major outcome of the European Commission’s Ocean Pact announced yesterday, the DTO transforms Europe’s call for collective action into a powerful digital infrastructure for international cooperation, informed decision-making, and bold strategies for ocean sustainability.
